Standards
one of the following:
  1. (a) Cavity wall A wall consisting of two leaves of masonry separated by a cavity.
  2. (b) Diaphragm wall A wall consisting of at least two leaves of masonry with vertical masonry diaphragms joining the leaves, constructed so as to achieve monolithic structural action.
  3. (c) Masonry veneer wall A wall consisting of a leaf of masonry together with a backing system that provides lateral support.
  4. (d) Single leaf wall A wall whose thickness is equal to the width of the masonry unit used in that wall.
  5. (e) Solid wall A wall whose thickness is greater than the width of one unit and in which the vertical joint between masonry leaves is filled solidly with mortar and which is intersected with header units or wire ties to give monolithic structural action.
  6. (f) Wall of geometric section A wall, other than rectangular section, that is constructed so as to achieve monolithic structural action.

Walls may be solid (made of stone, brick, concrete, glass, etc.), framed (made of timber, steel, other metals, etc.), or combinations, such as brick-veneer walls. The main types of wall are:
  1. (a) external walls to enclose the sides of a building or structure;
  2. (b) internal walls to partition the interior of a building or structure;
  3. (c) retaining walls to hold back earth or other solid material; and
  4. (d) peripheral walls to restrict access to or fence off open space.
