HB50
sedimentary rock, composed predominantly of grains of quartz sand, naturally consolidated and cemented together in a matrix of silica, calcite (carbonate of lime), iron oxides, and clay
Distinctions are made between argillaceous, calcareous, ferruginous, and silicified sandstone. Sandstone is widely used as a building stone. It is quarried in slabs, reduced by splitting or sawing, and then carved or dressed by the stonemason to the required shape.
