nominal size (DN)
Standards
a numerical designation of size, which is common to all components in a piping system other than components designated by outside diameters or by thread size. It is a convenient round number for reference purposes and is only loosely related to manufacturing dimensions
Nominal size is designated by DN followed by a number.
Not all piping components are designated by nominal size, for example, steel tubes are designated and ordered by outside diameter and thickness.
The nominal size (DN) cannot be subject to measurement and is not to be used for purposes of calculation.

HB50
<aggregate> designation of an aggregate which gives an indication of the maximum particle size present
The concept of nominal size is for convenience of reference and of ordering.
HB50
<product> numerical designation of size used in the designation of a product or component, approximately equal to the manufacturing dimension, but not necessarily actual size
Symbol: dN.
The actual size of an item, which is critical in construction, can vary significantly from the nominal size due to deviations in production and the tolerances allowed on operations such as machining (cutting, sawing and dressing) and drying. Nominal dimensions should never be used where precision assembly is essential.
