master keying

HB50
arrangement whereby a series of locks, in addition to be operated by its specific unit key, can be operated a master key and possibly one or more sub-master keys
Which key in this hierarchy of keys operates a given lock must be predetermined and carefully logged. While it facilitates emergency access and reduces the number of keys carried by those with universal access, rekeying the system can be very expensive should the master key be lost or stolen.
