The ends may be hipped or gabled. A mansard roof with the upper slopes less than 10° may be assumed to be flat topped. Mansard roofs maximize the space below and usually contain habitable rooms with dormer windows for natural lighting. Named after the French architect François Mansard (1598-1666).
