soil, subsoil or rock, whether built-up or natural, upon which a structure is supported
It is sometimes used to refer to those portions of a structure such as piles, piers, or footings which transmit the structure loads to the ground. However, the convention used in Australia is to favour the use of footing for the structure and foundation for the supporting soil.
