A buttress gives additional strength and stability to a wall, distribute superimposed loads and/or resist the lateral thrusts from an arch, roof, or vault, as in large churches and cathedrals. Corner buttresses, used to strengthen towers or buildings, are named according to their plan shape: angle buttress, clasping buttress, diagonal buttress, or setback buttress.
